The town of Gallipoli has been home to important figures who left their marks in Turkish history and culture, notably Piri Reis, Gelibolulu Mustafa Âlî and the Yazıcızâdes. The city has also rich history and cultural heritage going back to Antiquity. UNESCO has declared 2013 as the “Piri Reis Year” on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the publication of the Map of Piri Reis. As a result, the historical and cultural heritage of Gallipoli will come to the attention of the World. To celebrate the anniversary of this event, Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University and Canakkale Governorship will jointly organize an international symposium under the aegis of the Secretary General of the Presidency Prof. Dr. Mustafa İsen.
